About Us

Our Mission

Kazuri’s mission is to celebrate and preserve the rich tradition of Kenyan and African craftsmanship, with humanity at the heart of everything we do. We operate with deep respect and kindness toward people, the planet, and creativity itself, honoring our artisans and those who wear our pieces. We are committed to equity, community, and sustainability, empowering our artisans through profit-sharing and training programs. Our products, made from eco-friendly clay sourced near Mt. Kenya, reflect a profound respect for nature. At the core of our mission is creating timeless, handcrafted jewellery that fosters a shift from disposable fashion to enduring craftsmanship.

How it began

Kazuri, derived from the Swahili word for "small and beautiful," was founded in 1975 by Lady Susan Wood in Nairobi, Kenya with not much but a love for collecting beads and a dream to create employment opportunities for women from the area. Thus a humble workshop with two employees emerged and a remarkable journey began. By the late 1980’s the operation had moved from Woods’ garden shed to a factory which employed over 100 people.

Fast forward to the present, Kazuri remains a world-renowned brand and champion of sustainable, handcrafted jewelry. Every necklace, bracelet, and earring carries the essence of its maker's dedication and creativity, making it truly one-of-a-kind.

Stocked in several countries and worn by fans like Meryl Streep, the brand continues in a long and rich heritage of adornment in Kenya while celebrating the country’s beauty and nature through sustainably crafted jewelry.

Through the years, we have honed our skills and techniques, perfecting the art of handmade bead production. Each bead is meticulously shaped, painted, and fired by our skilled artisans, ensuring exceptional quality and attention to detail.

Craft that carries a deeper significance

It represents a legacy of empowerment, as we provide employment opportunities for women in marginalized communities. By working with Kazuri, these talented artisans gain financial independence, support their families, and contribute to the betterment of their communities.

To craft Kazuri beads, we use sustainably sourced clay from the foothills of Mount Kenya.
